Energy Efficiency

January 21st, 2010

Energy efficiency is on everyone’s mind these days.

And of course those customers who know me, have likely been exposed to my humorous side on occasion.

So how’s this for some baaaddd energy puns?

What did the Michigan wind farm say when it met Governor Jennifer Granholm?
We’re big fans of yours…

What’s the best way to charge a car battery?
With a credit card.

What did the 600 kilowatt Traverse City Light and Power wind turbine say to the smaller 15 kilowatt wind turbine?
Trick question: TCL&P’s wind turbine doesn’t talk. It whispers.

Okay. Before you get the hook, indulge me.

Here at Trend we’re practicing our own form of energy efficiency. It comes with our HunterDouglas line of Duette® honeycomb shades. First developed by HunterDouglas in 1985 in response to the energy crisis of the late 70’s, the Duette line has been popular with customers seeking energy savings in their window treatments.

Recently HunterDouglas has also introduced its Duette Architella Collection®. A novel patented technique allows honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb construction. This innovation not only helps you and your family to be more comfortable in our Northern Michigan climes, but also over the seasons save on heating as well as cooling costs. And there’s something else you should know: the Architella is eligible for a federal tax credit this year.

You’re invited to stop by the store to see these window coverings. And while you’re here, browse our HunterDouglas Gallery collection. We offer the industry’s largest selection of energy-efficient, custom-made window treatments. They’re designed and assembled in the U.S., and backed by a lifetime guarantee.

The welcome mat is always out and we hope to see you soon….

The Hunter Douglas Gallery Advantage

January 21st, 2010

As the only Hunter Douglas Gallery designated window treatment dealer north of Grand Rapids, Trend Window & Design takes its role seriously as the premier provider and installer of custom made window treatments in Northern Michigan.

The Gallery program is actually an alliance between HunterDouglas and Trend, notes Sid Lammers, Trend owner and founder. “Our focus is providing customers with a complete satisfying shopping experience. This entails everything from the initial inquiry about world famous HunterDouglas products, to delivery and installation.”

This customer focus is one of the prime reasons one of the world leaders in window treatments established the Gallery store authorization. The ongoing alliance with special stores like Trend has raised the industry standard for window fashions retailing. By building and supporting this select group of retailers who have fulfilled the exacting requirements set forth by HunterDouglas, Trend Window & Design has positioned itself to offer customers an atypical shopping experience.

“Our staff hears time and time again from first time visitors to the store of their surprise at our range of inventory and level of services,” remarks Sid.

He points out that the HunterDouglas Gallery store distinction does not come easily and is not for all window treatment dealers. “The process is an exacting one.”

HunterDouglas fabricators must first nominate their retailers for the alliance. The stores then complete a rigorous screening process before being accepted as HunterDouglas Gallery dealers.

Among the program requirements:

  • Gallery stores must be full-service
  • Financially stable
  • Independently owned retail stores
  • Have a demonstrated focus on providing customers with a thoroughly satisfying shopping experience
  • Demonstrated dedication to promoting the HunterDouglas brand

In sum, reflects Sid, the relationship with HunterDouglas has been good for Trend and its customers. “We’re a better store because of it, and as a result our customers receive greater exposure to quality inventory and a wide range of professional services.”

Regular professional training seminars keep the customer service staff of Trend Window & Design current and knowledgeable.

Interior designer Shawna Rye, has numerous certificates acknowledging her participation in industry seminars over the years.

The sessions are hosted by a variety of trade associations, but mainly by Hunter Douglas, Trend’s long time primary window covering supplier. As the only Michigan window treatment retailer north of Grand Rapids to carry the distinguished Hunter Douglas “Gallery” designation, Trend staff regularly attend these training seminars. The result is a prestigious “certified trainer” designation, verification that the recipient has fulfilled the rigorous requirements of the “Hunter Douglas Window Fashions Gallery”. This ensures the highest level of certified and professional service in our industry, notes Trend owner Sid Lammers. It also lets our customers know that we care enough about their business to make this investment in our staff.

It should be noted that owner Lammers also carries the certification of a Hunter Douglas Gallery certified trainer.

Defining Your Window Needs

October 19th, 2009

As a primer to start home owners thinking about window treatments, here’s a series of questions that Trend interior designer Shawna Rye and interior décor consultant Kay Johnston often ask their clients:

1. What kind of window design are you seeking?

The “type” of design you decide on—whether it’s hard shutters paired with soothing fabrics and panels, or luxurious draperies versus geometric blinds—will give us (Trend staff) a solid direction on a window design that’s perfectly suited for you.

2. Are you looking for window treatments that will reinforce the period style of a room?

Do your rooms reflect classical, traditional or modern settings—with clean geometric lines? Are the furnishings and upholstery bright and floral, or textured with square lines and neutral? Try to observe other interior elements in your room in order to determine the best fit for the best window treatment.

3. Would you prefer to brighten or subdue your room?

Ask yourself if the room needs dimmer or brighter light during certain times of the day. If it’s your bedroom, you may prefer the sunlight to stream through in the morning instead of providing a darkening effect, for instance. If it’s a kitchen, you may prefer a light colored sheet fabric over a sliding door to brighten the space, versus a treatment with a heavier, richer hued fabric.

4. Do you prefer colorful patterns or solids?

Once you determine your window treatment needs in relation to the rest of your room, you’ll need to then consider the details of the treatment itself. What colors would you prefer on the window, and what type of fabric prints can you coordinate if you prefer a layered window treatment effect?

5. Are you seeking long-lasting fabrics that are easy to care for, or do you prefer natural fabrics that have less shelf life?

Fabric preference has a lot do with how long you want the window treatment to hang in the window, as well as how much you’re willing to spend on the fabrics, and how you choose to maintain and care for them. ADO fabrics are polyester, which means they’re guaranteed not to shrink, stretch or fade and are machine washable. Other natural fibers like silk, hemp and velvet, while beautiful, cannot last as long in a window.

6. What’s your budget?

Customized window treatments can be quite affordable, especially when taking into consideration fabric guarantees, washability and re-usability. Ask us about ADOfabric window treatment options and learn all about the affordable, beautiful solutions you can put on your windows.

Trend Announces ‘Soft Fashions Choices’ to Window Covering Line-up

October 19th, 2009

Two new soft fashions choices have been introduced by Trend Window & Design to their in-store showroom.

“Elements Roman Shades” and “Essentials Soft Fashions Made Easy” are the two window treatment styles now being offered at Trend, and introduced by Lafayette Interior Fashions, one of the country pre-eminent manufacturers of window fashions and a long time Trend supplier.

“The ‘Elements Roman Shades’ line offers four of the most popular roman shade styles in the industry,” notes Kay Johnston, Trend interior décor specialist”. They come in four of the most popular roman shade styles.”

The styles include Flat Roman, Casual Roman, Hobbled Roman and Knife Pleat Roman, the latter just released in the fall of 2009. Shades are available in 3 patterns with 30 best selling solid colors. They’re ready for viewing in the Trend showroom in one easy to use tri-fold sample portfolio, says Kay.

Some 40 styles are included in the “Essential” line by Lafayette, along with a selection of drapery hardware basics.

“Lafayette simplified the styles of this line while still allowing custom sizes”, explains Kay. “We have over 3000 Select masterpieces fabrics to select from. This takes the guess work out of selecting fabrics for our customers.”
